Car Crashes into Home, Suspect on the Run

Authorities in Bolivar County are looking for suspect that crashed into a home outside of Shaw around midnight.
Bolivar County Sheriff’s deputies attempted pull over the driver for erratic behavior. Instead the suspect sped up and lost control crashing into a home.
Several agencies searched the area but were unsuccessful. There is still no suspect at this time.
Update on Gas Explosion

Questions are still unanswered in the gas line explosion on Pecan Drive last weekend.
The owner of the property, Tony Scribner was replacing the wall mounted heater for the rented property.
Authorities believe that the gas line had not been shut off when they replaced a gas water heater with an electric one. Two others inside the home said they could smell gas.
The explosion was caused when Scribner lit the wall mounted heater. The flames reportedly blew him completely out of the house.
Fly-In Starts Today in Merigold

A large crowd is anticipated this weekend for the Dorr Field Fly-In in Merigold.
Honoring the former ag pilot and stunt performer Johnny Dorr, the event features 12 pilots and vintage planes from the 1920s through 1970s.
The two-day event starts today at 11 a.m. across from Hayes Cooper Center.
Unemployment Forum Monday

The VISTA Program at Delta State University will host a community forum Monday to meet the needs of the unemployed.
The Delta Recovery Project creates opportunities for low income individuals in financial literacy, and employment skills and training.
Earlier this year VISTA received over $210,000 in grant funds for the project which is expected to end in September of next year.
The forum starts at 9 a.m.at the Alumni and Foundation House on the campus.
Ratings Announced Monday for School Districts

School districts across the state will receive preliminary accountability ratings on Monday.
Once released, each district will get a chance to review these numbers, consisting of test scores and ratings. The final results should be released in November.
One school district that has become confident is Mound Bayou whose students have been consistent across the board in test scores according to administrators.
UM Alums want Chant Banned

The University of Mississippi wants to rid its football games of the chant, "The South will rise again."
Ole Miss Chancellor Dan Jones said he's received complaints from alumni that the slogan is offensive.
He recently asked the school's band director to modify the tune in a way that would discourage the chants that usually come at the song's end. The chant only became a custom at the games within the last five years.
Attack at Delta Prisons Leaves Two Injured

Officers are being sent to a private prison in the Mississippi Delta where inmates attacked and injured two guards.
Corrections officials say several inmates from California, who had been transferred to the prison, attacked the staff.
The incident occurred Thursday during breakfast in the dining hall at the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler.
Staff used a chemical spray to break up the attack.
MS Casino Winnings Fall

Mississippi casinos saw their September winnings fall 2.8 percent from a year ago, even though business was up slightly along the Gulf Coast.
The Mississippi State Tax Commission says the casinos took in $186.6 million last month, compared with $192.2 million in September 2008.
In August, casinos won $205 million.
Chamber Wins Health Challenge

The Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce walking team edged the team from Delta State to win the first Cleveland/Delta State Health Challenge.
The Chamber completed 264 miles in three weeks while Delta State finished 244 miles. The City of Cleveland finished with 147 miles in the three-week period.
DSU President Dr. John Hilpert initiated the challenge to Mayor Billy Nowell at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the community’s new walking trail last month.
The trail marked the first phase of the “Healthy Campus/Community Initiative”.
Residents Concerned for Safety

A handful of residents in Cleveland’s sixth ward met this week to talk about creating a possible neighborhood watch program.
Alderman Ted Campbell called the meeting, adding that some people are afraid to call the police when they see something bad happening.
Cleveland Police Chief Buster Bingham, also in attendance ensured that any information given to them would be kept anonymous.
A neighborhood watch program teaches citizens how to help themselves by identifying and reporting suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.
Allen Canning Shuts Down

Another Delta company has shut its doors effective immediately.
Allen Canning Company based in Moorhead discontinued production Tuesday.
In all, around 170 workers will be without jobs at the facility which has been operating since 1972.
Officials say the company which has facilities in Arkansas, Louisiana and North Carolina, was forced to consolidate facilities to try and save money.
Family Suing Greenwood School District

The Greenwood Public School District is facing a half million dollar lawsuit over a spanking.
The family, whose name wasn’t released, says their 11-year old boy was paddled by a coach back in November 2008.
Attorneys say the child suffered kidney problems and severe bruising to the buttocks.
The coach allegedly failed to follow the school district's corporal punishment policy.
Unemployment Down in MS

Mississippi's unemployment rate has dropped nearly a percentage point.
Figures released Wednesday by the state Department of Employment Security show the state's unemployment rate for September was 8.8 percent, down from 9.7 percent in August.
The national rate for September is 9.8 percent.
Bolivar County had one of the biggest drops in unemployment rates. The rate was 9 percent in September compared to 10.5 in August.
Man Cons Elder Person

A Greenville man sits in jail after exploiting a vulnerable adult.
Ocean Springs authorities with the help of the U.S. Marshalls arrested 47-year old Dwight Cannon last weekend.
A relative told police Cannon took $6,000 to $10,000 from a vulnerable adult in Ocean Springs and then fled the county before a warrant could be served.
Two Arrested for Child Abuse

A man and a woman have been charged with felony child abuse after police says they left a 4-month-old infant alone in a hotel room.
Greenwood police say the child's mother, 19-year-old Keriah Sims of Indianola, had her bond set at $5,000. The man, 21-year-old Carlos Grant of Greenwood, was also charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Authorities say two clear plastic bags of marijuana were seized from the room and a .38 caliber handgun was recovered from under the bed.
Clarksdale Officials Looking for Missing Laptops

School officials in Clarksdale are trying to figure out what happened to several laptops that went missing from an elementary school.
Thirteen computers valued at over $16,000 were not accounted for during an inventory done last month at Booker T Washington.
Officials say there have been three administrators at the school over the last two years and inventory was only done twice a year.
Cleveland Company Awarded Jail Bid

Cleveland-based Robinson Electric Company was one of four contractors with bids awarded for the new correctional facility in Washington County.
The Washington County Board of Supervisors voted Monday to go ahead and award the contracts contingent on bond sales, as early as next week.
The new jail carries a $12 million price and should be up and running in a little over a year.
Open House Big Success

Hundreds turned out Monday night to learn about and support their public school system.
The Cleveland School District hosted an open house at the Bolivar County Expo Center.
Booths were also set up representing every department in the school district, as well as all 12 schools.
Schools leaders said the district plans to make the fair an annual event.
State Fair Numbers Low

Despite being open an extra day this year, the Mississippi State Fair had its second-lowest attendance of the past 15 years.
Fair Commission executive director Billy Orr says the rain, chilly air and a weak economy was to blame for the low turnout. Attendance at the 13-day event was over 496,000.
That's down dramatically from last year, when attendance was over 600,000 in 12 days.
The lowest attendance of the past 15 years was in 2004, when only 421,273 people turned out during several days of rain.
Shooter Named in Murder-Suicide

Authorities in Ruleville have released the name of the man who shot and killed his girlfriend and then himself in an apparent murder-suicide.
Greenwood native Lavarus Bowman shot and killed his then girlfriend, 17-year old Bianca Keyes Friday afternoon, at her grandmother’s home.
Police say the shooting stemmed from a heated argument between the couple.
Gas Explosion at Cleveland Home

A gas explosion in a Bolivar County neighborhood remains under investigation. The explosion happened Saturday evening on Pecan Drive in Cleveland.
There is very little information, but reports surfaced that the victims were changing their heater when the heater apparently exploded.
One neighbor said that he could smell gas before the explosion occurred.
Dorr Fly-in This Weekend

Shooting in Metcalf

A Metcalf man was arrested for a weekend shooting. Authorities charged Joe Earl Shepard with aggravated assault after allegedly shooting Keon Jones.
Police say Jones was chasing Shepard with a baseball bat when Shepard's father gave him a twelve gauge shotgun. Shepard then allegedly shot at Jones.
Jones reportedly didn’t suffer any injuries, but cartridges were found near a local cemetery where the shooting occurred.
Locals Feast for TV Show

Dozens gathered together Sunday at Dockery Farms for the final day of shooting for the PBS show “The Endless Feast” that was filmed in greenwood last week.
Organizers of the Mississippi Delta feast proposed a “welcome table” to bring together the different communities within the region.
The food show travels across the country working with local chefs, farmers and food enthusiasts, showcasing the connection between a region and its foods.
Roosevelt Honored This Weekend

The annual festival to celebrate Theodore Roosevelt's great black bear hunt in the Mississippi Delta more than 100 years ago is Saturday in Rolling Fork.
Held at the Courthouse Square, the day will feature live entertainment and other activities.
The event pays homage to President Theodore Roosevelt's famous bear hunt that resulted in what is now the "teddy bear” and aims to increase awareness of bear preservation
Charges Dropped in Greenville Stabbing

Charges were dropped Monday in a fatal stabbing of a Greenville man.
26-year old Jonathan Weaver and his sister 24-year old La-kriticia Weaver were accused in the stabbing death of Willie Taylor Saturday.
During the hearing, the judge found that the stabbing was a case of self-defense, because Jonathan Weaver was trying to protect his sister.
Lakritcia was initially charged with murder after a domestic dispute, but Sunday Jonathan admitted that he had stabbed Taylor.
Swine Flu Vaccines Available

Officials with the state Department of Health say the state has received 60,000 dosages of injectable swine flu vaccine.
The state has another 69,000 dosages of the nasal spray. So far, about 900 providers have signed up to administer the vaccine.
Officials predict it could be awhile before mass vaccinations at schools begin.
Health numbers show nearly 1,200 cases of H1N1 flu and eight fatalities.
Open House at Expo Center

Each school will have a booth where the students and parents will present information.
Administrators say the first ever event is a good opportunity to show off the positive things about the schools.
Flu Shots in Bolivar County

Flu vaccines are available at the Department of Health in Bolivar County.
Residents over the age of six months are advised to get one. The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for children under 18.

Donations for Make-A-Difference Day Oct. 24

The community is encouraged to donate next week so that soldiers overseas can have a gift in time for Christmas.
American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 165 and the Cleveland Telecom Pioneers will be taking donations October 24 for Make-A-Difference Day in the parking lot of Gainspoletti & Associates.
Auxiliary Committee Service Chair Mary Jane Ervin says the organizations have gotten off to a good start so far. Some of the items being collected include hygiene items, DVD’s, candy and beef jerky.
Viking Cuts 30 Jobs

Viking Range Corp. has laid off 30 more employees in Greenwood.
Officials say that the layoffs last week involved salaried and hourly workers.
They were spread among the company's four manufacturing facilities in Leflore County and its corporate office in downtown Greenwood.
Since April 2008, Viking has cut 327 jobs, or about 23% of its total work force. It presently employs a little over 1,000 workers, 910 in Leflore County alone.
Woman in Custody for Weekend Stabbing

A Greenville woman is scheduled to appear in court today on stabbing charges.
Willie Taylor Jr. died Saturday at Delta Regional Medical Center after being stabbed in the chest.
Police say 24-year-old La-krit-izia Weever was arrested in connection to Taylor's death.
Authorities believe the crime was a result of a domestic dispute and the two were in a relationship.
Punishment Popular in Schools

Corporal punishment is practiced across the state, but there are many parents and administrators on both sides of the fence.
Last year there were nearly 58,000 cases of corporal punishment in 110 of the state's 152 school districts, according to the state Department of Education.
The rules vary by district with some requiring parental permission or even having a parent present. Greenwood’s school district was ranked second in the state with 2,886 incidents recorded last year.
One superintendent said the punishment is simply a tool in the toolbox.
Cellular South set to buy Alabama Wireless Company

Cellular South has announced plans to acquire Corr Wireless, based in north Alabama.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed last week. The acquisition requires regulator approval, which Cellular South officials say should be completed in several months.
Corr Wireless provides serves more than 30,000 customers in 18 counties of North Alabama and in Rome, Ga. It employs 130 people
Teen Killed in Murder-Suicide

Residents in a Bolivar County community remain in shock after a local teen was killed just hours before homecoming festivities.
Authorities in Ruleville say 17-year old Bianca Keyes was shot and killed Friday afternoon in an apparent murder-suicide. Her 23-year old boyfriend turned the gun on himself after shooting the teen at her grandmother’s house.
Detectives say the shootings stemmed from an argument between the two.
Keyes was shot once before he chased her down and she was shot again in the bathroom. The boyfriend, whose name was not released, shot himself in the kitchen. The last time a case like this happened in Ruleville was in 2006.
