Suspects Still at Large after Bank Heist

robbery_m No arrests have been made after an Indianola Bank Robbery Wednesday morning.

Police say two men wearing ski masks robbed the Planters Bank branch on Hwy 82 at gunpoint while workers were loading the drive-thru ATM.

Authorities don’t know how much cash was taken, but estimate to be in the thousands. The men escaped in a 2010 white Mitsubishi Gallant with Tennessee tags.

Bonds in Robbery Cases Set

Bonds have been set in a pair of robbery cases in Cleveland. Devonna Hutton was arrested last week for armed robbery and aggravated assault after shooting 71-year old David Brown and robbing him. Her bond was set at $20,000.

The two men involved in the robbery of Cleveland gas station were denied bond because of previous cases.

35-year old Leon Cox held up a gas station Monday night and along with the driver, 43-year old Grant Lewis, were arrested a short time later in Ruleville.

Man Arrested for Burglary

A Cleveland man is in custody after police found him inside a building he had broken in to.

21-year old Clifton Lindsey was charged with burglary after police arrested him Wednesday.

An officer on patrol found Haven’s Cleaners had been broken into. Officers found him hiding under some clothes.

Checkpoints Out for New Year’s Eve

police-light-small Authorities in the Delta will be out in force on New Year's Eve.

The Highway Patrol will have checkpoints in numerous locations, looking for intoxicated motorists.

Anyone with a blood-alcohol content of .08 percent or higher will be arrested for driving under the influence. Any drivers under the age of 21 who have consumed any alcohol will also be cited.

At the checkpoints, troopers will also check for drivers and passengers who aren't wearing seat belts, as well as drivers who don't have insurance.

AG Center to be Torn Down in Leflore County

Leflore County officials will be tearing down the AG Center after a series of fires.

Firefighters responded to fires over the weekend that caused minor damage, but did push the county to remove the building.

Officials said that once the contract is negotiated, they will have 90 days to tear down the structure.

The process was delayed when the county had to re-advertise several times because of bidding issues.

Problems Raised in Pizza Hut Lawsuit

justice2 Both sides in $1 million litigation against Greenwood's Pizza Hut are straining to gain an edge in a judicial tug-of-war that will determine where the case is tried.

A federal trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 7 in Greenville, however four cases remaining pending in the food poisoning case.

A judge ruled to delay the proceedings until the federal trial is finished.

The lawsuits allege that 19 church members got sick after eating at the restaurant in January because Pizza Hut was negligent in preparing the food

Proposed Soda Tax in 2010

Drinking a can of soda may cost a little more money next year.

State lawmakers are considering a bill that would put a two cent tax on presweetened soft drinks. The bill would be introduced by Clarksdale state representative John Mayo and try to reduce the amount of soft drinks Mississippi residents’ drink.

The proposed bill will also have benefits including $200 million in revenue for the state.

Miss. Gov. Asking for More Budget Power

Gov. Haley Barbour is asking for new budget cutting powers as state tax collection revenues continue to fall short.

Barbour said Wednesday that December tax revenues fell short by 10.8 percent - $41.2 million.

It's the 16th consecutive month Mississippi has missed the mark with more cuts expected by the end of the fiscal year.

Barbour asked the attorney general to clarify the law that requires the governor to cut every department's budget by 5 percent before more cuts.

State Sheriffs Unhappy with Barbour

Members of the Mississippi Sheriffs' Association are opposing Gov. Haley Barbour's plan to close community health centers and Oakley Training School.

Oakley is the only state-run juvenile correction center in Mississippi.

Barbour's plan came in a budget proposal aimed helping the state deal with plummeting tax collections in the current recession.

Holmes County Sheriff Willie March, president of the association, told The Associated Press that county jails are not appropriate places for juveniles and the mentally ill.

Indianola Bank Robbed by Gunmen

A community is shaken after an Indianola bank was robbed this morning.

Police say around 9 am two women who worked at the Planters Bank on Hwy 82 were loading money into the ATM when two black males wearing ski masks approached with guns and demanded money.

Authorities don’t know how much cash was taken but it estimates to be in the thousands.

Police did say that the men drove off in a 2010 white Mitsubishi Gallant with Tennessee or Arkansas tags. Stay tuned to KIX 92.1 for more details on this story.

Men Arrested After Robbery, Chase

Two men are in custody after allegedly robbing a Cleveland gas station and going on a high speed chase.

Around 11:35 Monday night, police say 35-year old Leon Cox robbed the Exxon gas station on North Davis after holding up the store clerk with a knife and grabbing a handful of cash.

An officer pulling up to the scene was able identify the getaway vehicle driven by Grant Lewis, and quickly joined several officers on the chase towards Ruleville. The men fled on foot after stalling in a yard and were arrested a short time later.

Jones Turns Herself In

A Shaw woman wanted for aggravated assault has turned herself in to authorities.

26-year old Patricia Jones was wanted by local and federal authorities for an alleged incident during the Thanksgiving holidays. Police say she attacked another woman in a bar with a bottle, injuring her eye.

The initial altercation was between Jones and another woman. Jones is currently being held in Bolivar County waiting her initial court appearance.

Man Charged in Indianola Shooting

Indianola police have a man in custody in connection with a weekend shooting.

19-year old Jalexius James was charged with aggravated assault after allegedly shooting another man Sunday afternoon in the neighborhood of Aquarius Circle.

Deon McClinton was shot in the shoulder while sitting in his car, then shot twice more as he tried to flee. Authorities said the shooting extended from an argument the two had over a woman.

Former Superintendent Promotes Motivation Overseas

A former area superintendent has come back home from a trip to China.

Dr. Montrell Greene the former head of the Cleveland School District is the current CEO of Empowerment 360, an organization that promotes motivation throughout the Delta and the country.

During the two week adventure, Greene lectured more than 1,500 students on the U.S. education system and in the hopes of developing English departments in China schools.

Greene feels that exposure to other cultures is essential for both American students and teachers.

Leland Grinch

Police in Leland arrested a man who was responsible for several burglaries over the holiday weekend.

Michael Davenport was charged with two counts of burglary and one count of larceny.

Authorities say Davenport stole numerous items from one home including toys and tree ornaments. Police say he stole a computer from another home just blocks away.

A concerned family member called police after noticing the stolen items in his home.

Teen with Rifle at School Heads to Grand Jury

A Leflore County high school student accused of brining a gun on school grounds, will go before a grand jury in February.

Daniel Washington will be charged as an adult after sheriffs recovered a rifle that he had stolen. Washington later told them he planned to injure another student.

A 14-year old minor involved in the case faces similar charges in youth court.

Graceland Too, Another Elis Shrine

A Holly Springs man worships Elvis Presley so much; he turned his house into a makeshift shrine.

Paul McLeod says his 157-year-old house is dedicated to the man he considers the greatest entertainer and humanitarian of all time.

Graceland Too features a floor-to-ceiling collection of all things Elvis - curtains, photos, album covers, figurines and other trinkets.

McLeod is so obsessed, he even named his only son after the King of Rock n Roll.

Death Row Inmate Denied Appeal

A federal judge has denied an appeal by death row inmate Willie Jerome Manning.

Manning was sentenced to death in the 1992 murders of 2 Mississippi State University students.

The judge said Manning failed to prove any of his claims. Manning was found guilty in 1994 in the shooting deaths of Jon Steckler and Tiffany Miller.

Latest Swine Flu Death

The Mississippi swine flu death toll has risen. Tuesday, the state Department of Health announced the 14th fatality, a resident in Tate County on December 16.

There have been 1,279 cases of swine flu in Mississippi.

Vaccines are available at all local county health departments. The injectable vaccine and the nasal mist vaccine both are free of charge.

Two Dead in Holiday Crash in Clarksdale

traffic Clarksdale police are still investigating a fatal crash the day after Christmas.

Two people are dead after a car goes the wrong way on Hwy. 61.

Authorities say 42-year old Jimmie Reed and 48-year old Bettie Starks were riding down Hwy 61 North towards Memphis when Brett Conner and his daughter collided with the vehicle after they were driving the wrong way.

Reed was killed at the scene while Starks died on the way to a Memphis hospital.

Conner and his daughter suffered minor injuries.

Delta Next Making its Way Around

A magazine intended to encourage kids to graduate high school will be making its way to regional high schools.

Delta Next, is a 20-page publication that has been distributed to schools in the area by the Delta Revitalization Task Force.

According to statistics, dropout rates in the Delta are extremely high. The magazine warns students of the dangers of dropping out and gives examples of students from the Delta who have achieved academic success.

Man Electrocuted in Greenville

Authorities in Greenville are trying to figure how a man was killed over the weekend.

Washington County corners said 42-year old Charles Richardson was electrocuted in his home. Police said he was home alone and they don’t suspect foul play.

His body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy.

One Injured in Indianola Shooting

Shooting Indianola authorities are investigating a weekend shooting that left one man injured.

Police reported shots fired Sunday afternoon at a neighborhood on Aquarius Circle.

The victim suffered wounds to his arms and legs and was sent to a Jackson hospital.

Authorities say the motive is still unknown.

Ag Center Intentionally Set on Fire

ss-45448-firefighter Authorities in Greenwood say a rash of fires at the Leflore County AG center were intentionally set.

Firefighters responded to a report of flames in a stall Saturday. They returned to the scene Sunday, finding flames in multiple ground-level stalls.

The building has been targeted in the past with smaller fires that could be a threat to surrounding neighborhoods.

Officials say the building has not been used in two decades, and suggest that it needs to be removed to prevent future problems.

MDA Awards Project Grants

Several small municipalities and counties were awarded projects grants by the Mississippi Development Authority.

In all, 54 towns and counties were awarded as much as $100,000 for various projects.

Several in the region were named to the list including Belzoni, Batesville, Coahoma and Yazoo County.

Medical Helicopter Based in Winona

A Mississippi based air ambulance company will have a medical helicopter in Winona to aid victims of traumatic injuries and critical illnesses.

MedStat, which has its corporate headquarters in Winona, is the primary emergency ambulance provider for 10 counties in central and north Mississippi.

Company officials say the helicopter will help provide rapid access to major medical centers in Jackson, Memphis, Tupelo and Greenville.

MHP: Citations, Wrecks Up During the Holidays

State troopers say there have been nearly twice the number of vehicle wrecks and 2,000 more citations issued in the first few days of the holiday period compared to 10 years ago.

The Highway Patrol handed out over 6,000 tickets and responded to nearly 200 accidents since Christmas Eve.

Despite the high number of tickets, the number of DUI arrests was down, only 85 this holiday period compared to 116 in 2008.

A new grant allowed the state to provide more muscle with 45 additional troopers this holiday.

Elementary School Honored by State

Another school in Bolivar County was awarded for their educational success.

Brooks Elementary in the North Bolivar School District was honored for their performance on state test scores in language and math in third and fourth grades.

School principal Rev. Fredrick Ford says despite limited funds and resources they made the cut and were selected for high achievement.

Ford also credits the teachers and supportive parents for the schools success.

Bills Pile up for the Bolivar County Jail

Several Delta communities that house inmates in Bolivar County have racked up a bill of over $150,000 in unpaid bills according to the state auditors office.

Inmate housing costs are set by the state and vary depending on population at a facility. The state pays nearly $30 to house inmates which includes food, clothing, security and operating costs for the facility.

Warden Tommy Taylor was allowed to pursue the issue aggressively because he says the problem has gotten worse over the last two years.

Man Dies After he was Texting and Driving

Authorities say texting while driving may have been the cause of a one-vehicle accident that killed a man over the weekend.

32-year-old David Burchfield died Saturday from injuries sustained in the accident on U.S. 61.

Burchfield, a musician, was on his way to Vicksburg for a show when the accident occurred. A passenger injured an arm in the accident.

The passenger told police that Burchfield was texting while driving when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to flip over.

Parchman Officials Want Decree Lifted

Officials at the State Penitentiary at Parchman are asking a federal judge to release them from a consent decree that forced changes at a 1,000-inmate unit at the prison.

A series of incidents two years ago at the prison's "Unit 32" - including three homicides and a suicide - led to a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union and a series of reforms.

Now that the reforms are in place attorneys for the prison want the court order lifted.

Clarksdale Reutilization Effort Underway

Organizers with Clarksdale’s revitalization project are trying to figure out how to spend their $75,000 budget for the New Year.

Board leaders expressed the need to clean up the downtown area of the city with the hopes of recruiting businesses to relocate there.

However, the recent rash of vehicle break in has raised some questions about the safety of the downtown area.

Bad Drug Deal Leaves One Dead, Two Injured

A drug deal gone bad in Greenville left one man dead and two others wounded. Police say it was ninth homicide of the year.

Authorities said Torrence Lott was shot several times on Saturday and died from his wounds at a local hospital.

Two other men, Terrence Bridges and Marco Hemphill, were also taken to the hospital Saturday with gunshot wounds.

Hemphill was charged with murder in Lott's death and aggravated assault on Bridges. Bridges is charged with aggravated assault against Hemphill.

Miss. Named Most Religious State

A survey by the Pew Research Center says Mississippi is the most religious state.

The center's Forum on Religion & Public Life used polling data to rank states based on what percentage of the population said religion was very important in their lives.

82 percent of those surveyed in Mississippi said religion is important in their lives.

Alabama and Arkansas came in at 74 percent and Louisiana followed with 73 percent.

Two Dead in Holiday Accidents

Two people died in traffic accidents in Mississippi over the Christmas holiday period.

Highway Patrol officials said that a Memphis man died Friday when two vehicles collided on Highway 61 near Walls. No one was injured in the second vehicle.

A Prentiss woman was struck and killed Friday as she walked along Mississippi Highway 42 in Jefferson Davis County.

The Christmas travel period began on Thursday. The Highway Patrol counts fatalities that occur on roads patrolled by state troopers.

Former State Rep. Capps Dies

Former Mississippi State Rep. Charles Wilson Capps Jr. of Cleveland is dead at the age of 84.

He died Friday at Bolivar Medical Center. Capps was born Jan. 1, 1925, in Merigold, Miss., but lived all his life in Cleveland.

His career in politics began in 1964, when he was elected sheriff of Bolivar County. Capps was a state representative from 1972 until he retired in 2005.

His funeral will be Monday at First United Methodist Church in Cleveland.
