Hazel A. Vanlandingham, 90, of Hamilton, Mississippi, formerly of Rosedale, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2010 at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Higdon Herrington officiating. Burial will follow in Doty Springs Cemetery in Kosciusko, Mississippi with Rev. Terry Edwards officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Ray Funeral Home.
Mrs. Vanlandingham was born on March 12, 1920 in Kosciusko, MS to George Porter Hodge and Mary Lillian Ray Hodge. She married Charlie Jackson Vanlandingham. She was employed at Baxter Laboratories until her retirement.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Jackson Vanlandingham; and two grandchildren, Greg Savage and Chase Vanlandingham; and one great grandchild, Adam West Savage.
Survivors include her son, Lenwood C. Vanlandingham of Hamilton; a daughter, Maxine V. Garrett of Hamilton; a brother, George Lamar Hodge of Inverness; and six sisters, Alice Williams of Wichita Falls, Texas, Marie Pilcher and Dorothy Nell Hollis, both of Meridian, Neva Francis Dunn of Chatworth, Georgia, and Flora Love Daigle and Barbara Ann Weatheby, both of Moss Point, MS; 3 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be James Steed, Sammie Fowler, Richie Vanlandingham, Bradley Vanlandingham, Madison Vanlandingham and Steven Vanlandingham.
Honorary pallbearers are Bailey Vanlandingham, Josh Vanlandingham and
Gage Vanlandingham.

Billy Pierce Hackney, 80, of Cleveland, Mississippi, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2010 at St. Luke Methodist Church with Rev. Dixie Holder-Cummings officiating. Burial will follow at New Cleveland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m Friday, April 30, 2010 at St. Luke Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Mr. Hackney was born April 30, 1929 in Springfield, TN, to B.W. and Stella Pierce Hackney. He married Marjorie Goodyear Hackney in August 1950. They were married for 59 years. He served his country faithfully in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from University of Tennessee Pharmacy School in 1956 and served as a registered pharmacist for 54 years. They moved to Cleveland in 1962, and he was employed by Simmons Drugs, Economy Drugs and Paul’s Discount before retiring. After retirement, he worked at Gilbow’s Drug Store and Buckley’s Pharmacy. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by parents, B.W. and Stella Pierce Hackney; and brother, Wallace Ray Hackney.
Survivors include his wife, Majorie Goodyear Hackney of Cleveland, MS; daughter, Beth Heinz (Charlie) of Shelby, MS; Sons, Michael Hackney (Elizabeth) of Cleveland, MS and William Hackney (Julia) of Cypress, TX; brother, Bobby B. Hackney (Betty) of Southaven, MS; Grandchildren, Jordan Whitlach (Chris), Cameron Hacker, Will Hackney, Taylor Hackney, Anna Pierce Hackney, Brittany Heinsz, Brigham Heinsz, and Tres Heinsz.
Pallbearers will be Gillie McKibben, Mike Gilbow, Lowell Kirkbride, Ronnie Hill, Charles Heinsz, Hal Mitchell, Gene Lewis, Trayce Taylor, Billy Boswell and Taylor Roberts.

Mr. Alfred Burley Smith, 80, of Cleveland, Mississippi, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday April 30, 2010at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Artie Nute and Rev. John Thomas. Burial will follow at Delta Heights Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2010 also at Ray Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith was born September 27, 1929 to Bob and Veda Smith in Runnels County, Tx and was reared in Texas as well. He married Mrs. Peggy Ray on February 2, 1952. They were married for 57 years. He served in the United States Army in Germany. He was an electrical engineer and traveled extensively with his job and made friends throughout the world. He was loved dearly by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a deacon and a mason.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Veda Smith; daughter, Pam Kelley; and a grand-daughter, Kennedy Smith.
He is survived by a wife, Peggy Ray Smith of Cleveland, MS; daughter, Cindy Weaver (Tony) of Cascilla, MS; son, Joe Smith (Alice) of Boyle, Ms; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Charles Gilmer, Mark Carpenter, Charles “Buster” Bingham, Burney Jones, Jr., Ellis Earls, and John William Ray.

James E. Whittington, 92, of Cleveland

James E. Whittington 92, lovingly know as Mr. Whit, passed away Saturday, April 24 at St. Catherine's Village Nursing Home in Madison, MS. Mr. Whit was born August 3, 1917 in Leake County, MS near Carthage. He left Carthage in 1938 to attend Mortuary College in St. Louis specializing in plastic surgery. He served his apprenticeship in Hattiesburg, MS. In 1940, while working at Dickens Funeral Home in Batesville, MS. he met the love of his life, Dorothy (Dot) Brasell Whittington. She preceded him in death in January of 2000.
Mr. Whit served in World War II combat as Staff Sergeant with the Americal Artillery Division of the Army from March 1941 - 1945. He would later manage Fletcher Funeral Home in Cleveland from 1948 until he retired in 1978. He and Dot owned and operated Whit's Flowers for 10 years. They were active members of the First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland until they moved to St. Catherine's Village in Madison, MS in 1996 where they were members of First Presbyterian Church of Madison.
Mr. Whit is survived by a daughter, Annelle Whittington Rose and her husband Jim of Olive Branch, MS, a son Al Whittington of Atlanta, GA, two grandchildren, Billy Rose of Meridian, MS, Laurie Rose Lorio of Charlotte, NC and 4 great granddaughters.
Visitation will be held Tuesday night from 6 - 8 at Ray funeral home and Wednesday from 10 - 11at First Presbyterian Church of Cleveland with the funeral service following at 11. Burial will be at Cleveland Cemetery.

Mrs. Cutts was born on July 17, 1951 to Hershel Winters and Sherline Henson Carey. She was married to Charles Cutts. Judy worked in education for 35 years at the Bolivar County School District. She attended the Cleveland Church of the Nazarene.
She is preceded in death by her parents Hershel Winters of Batesville, MS and Sherline Henson Carey and James E. Carey of Cleveland, MS.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Cutts; daughter Jessika Cutts of Hattisburg, MS; sisters Diane Horton of Cleveland, MS, Renee Buckley of Hickory, MS; and brother Jim Carey, Charleston, SC.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Shaw. Burial will follow in Shaw Cemetery under the direction of Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at the church with a Rosary following at 7 p.m. and a visitation again from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the church, prior to the service.
Mrs. Giompoletti was born on October 11, 1914 in Shaw to John Ferretti and Pasquelini Mazzoli Ferretti. She married Merico Giompoletti.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Merico Giompoletti; a brother, Tullio Ferretti; five sisters, Lena Bernardi, Rosa Faccini, Albina Conico, Ann Kilgore and Louise Belenchia; and her parents, John and Pasquelini Ferretti.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Sheffield (Emory) of Hernando, MS; sons, Joseph Giompoletti (Mildred) of Pearcy, Arkansas, James Giompoletti (Annette) of Bruce, MS, John Giompoletti (Bennie) of Cleveland, MS, Charles Giompoletti of Indianola, MS, Paul Giompoletti (Debbie) of Florence, MS, Robert Giompoletti (Ann) of Madison, MS, Henry Giompoletti (Vicky) of Marianna, Arkansas; a sister, Mary Weaver of Shaw; sixteen grandchildren; and twenty one great grandchildren.

Gwen Westbrook Howell, age 83, of Oxford, died on Wednesday April 14, 2010 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital - North in Oxford, MS. She was born on December 25, 1926 to Roy and Emma Mae (Braden) Westbrook in Duncan, MS. Mrs. Howell grew up in Shelby, MS, graduated Shelby High School and attended Delta State College. She married John F. "Sonny" Howell in 1948 and together they lived in Baton Rogue, LA, Tampa FL, Galveston, TX, Gainesville, FL, Sherman, TX and Jackson, MS. After her retirement from the US Forest Service she moved to Oxford, MS to be near her daughter. Mrs. Howell was a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother; Richard A. Westbrook, sister; Ida L "Snookie" Agner and her companion dog Dixie who gave her joy and inspiration for the past 10 years. Edwin Moore Best, 63, of Drew died Saturday, April 18, 2010 at his home.
Mr. Best was born on January 19, 1947 in Brownsville, TN to Solon Moore Best and Ann McBroom Best. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1969. He was a member of the Chi Epsilon-National Civil Engineering Society, member of Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi-National Engineering Society. From 1995-2001, he was a Board Member of the Sunflower County Economic Development District, where he also served as Vice Chairman on a rotation basis, from 1996-2002, he was a Trustee of the North Sunflower County Hospital and Walter B. Crook Nursing Facility, serving as Vice Chairman, and from 1994-present, he was Finance Chairman of the Administrative Board of Drew United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his brother, Thomas G. Best of McLean, Virginia.

Maurice was born on March 23, 1918, in Choctaw County to John J. Hendon and Ada Ellis Hendon. She married Lake Hayes Towles in Isola, MS, on May 15, 1937. She and Lake made their home together in Sunflower County for over 62 years, where she was a homemaker and he farmed until his retirement.
She is preceded in death by her husband, on October 18, 2003; her parents, 3 brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include three daughters, Faye Gentry and her husband, Jerry, Ruth Stroud and her husband, Tom, Darleen Chandler and her husband, Lester; 6 grandchildren, Mechelle Wilson and her husband Mitch, Kristi Clark and her husband, Michael, Kathi Dunnam and her husband, Joe, Stephen Stroud and his wife, Melody, Gary Chandler and his wife , Phyllis, Leslie Waggoner and her husband, Jeff; and eleven great grandchildren, Laura Ashley, Laken, and Erin Wilson, Gentry and Quincee Clark, Mary and Anna Stroud, Asa, Quinn, and Carson Chandler, and Luke Waggoner.

James Adonis “Jimmy” Simpson, 86, of Shaw died Monday, April 5, 2010, at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Shaw Methodist Church in Shaw, MS with Rev. Gary Howse officiating. Burial will follow in Shaw Cemetery under the direction of Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1 - 2 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Mr. Simpson was born on November 2, 1923, in Shaw to Adonis “A” Simpson and Ruby Bell Simpson. He married Mary Elizabeth “Bette” Small on June 12, 1949, in Laurel, MS. He was a farmer and also worked for the USDA as a Federal Grain Inspector.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. A. Simpson; brother, Guy Simpson (Jackie); and two sisters, Helen Bennett (P.M.) and Mary Laura Thomas (Billy).
Survivors include his wife, Bette Simpson of Shaw; and two daughters, Grady Simpson Robinson of Shaw and Susan Simpson Steen of Cleveland.
Jimmy had a soft spot in his heart for children and animals, especially those in need. His last canine companion, Daisy, was Jimmy’s loyal friend during his last years.
Special thanks go to Dr. David and Marcie Walt, Ernestine Clark, Betty Strickland, Dianne Fly and the staffs of Advanced Physical Therapy and Continue Care.

Eloise W. Tharp, age 74, of Cleveland, died on Tuesday April 06, 2010 at the River Oaks Hospital. She was born on February 09, 1936 to J. H. and Cammie (Blackwell) Weeks in Boyle, MS. Eloise graduated from Boyle High School in 1954. She married Eugene Tharp on July 15, 1956 in Boyle Baptist Church Boyle, MS. Mrs. Tharp was a retired sales representative for Sears. She had worked in the Cleveland store for 42 years until her retirement. Mrs. Tharp was a reputable business woman who along-side her husband owned Gene's Vinyl Siding and The Cleveland Flower & Commissary. She was an active member of First Baptist Church Boyle, MS. Eloise will always be remembered for her kind heart and willingness to help anyone in need. Her family says she was a wonderful loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and a friend to all who knew her. Visitation will be held Thursday April 8, 2010 from 5:00 PM to 08:00 PM at the Cleveland Funeral Home in Cleveland. Funeral Services will be held Friday April 9, 2010 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church Boyle in Boyle, MS. Burial will follow at the New Cleveland Cemetery. Rev. Clarence Edwards and Rev. Granddaughter, Amanda and husband Stacey Oswalt of Cleveland, MS. Grandson, Ray and wife Kristy Daniels of Brandon, MS. Miriam Cramer Boyd Atkinson, 91 formerly of Drew, MS, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, April 4, 2010, at Walter B Crook Nursing Facility in Ruleville, MS.
Miriam was born on May 2, 1918, in Sallis, MS, to Lamar and Cramer Spiva Boyd She attended the Mississippi State College for Women, married Robed W Atkinson, and spent her life caring for her husband and two sons, Robert and Boyd. She loved to play bridge and was active in the community as a member of the Drew Garden Club, Drew Culture Club, and Young at Heart Dance Club of Greenwood. She was a member of the Drew United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Drew Country Club.
Miriam is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert (Bobby) W Atkinson in 1998, and a sister, Isabel Spiva Monk of Belzoni, MS, in 2008.
She is survived by two sons, Robed W. Atkinson, Jr, and wife, Jane, of Ft Walton Beach, FL, and Boyd P Atkinson, and wife, Angela, of Cleveland, MS, and a sister-in-Iaw, Marjorie Atkinson of Hilton Head, SC She is also survived by two grandchildren, Robert W Atkinson, Ill (Elise) of Denver, CO, Elizabeth Atkinson Schenk (Ron) of Windermere, FL, two step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Scott of Brandon, MS and Rob Scott of Asheville, NC, and by her precious great-grandchildren, Adelynn, Noah, Cassidy, Savanna, Brandy and Karissa. Visitation will be at the Cleveland Funeral Home on Tuesday evening April 13, from 6pm until 8pm. A memorial service will be held at Drew United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 14 at 2:00PM. Her cremains will be joined with those of her husband's and scattered on the family's farmland along the banks of the Sunflower River immediately following the memorial service. Cleveland, MS - Cecile Yvonne Powell, 87, died Saturday, April 3 at the North MS Medical Center in Tupelo, MS. She was born on July 15, 1922. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, a wonderful homemaker and a member of Calvery Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing, craftmaking, cooking and loved her dog, Brutus Bodinkle. She loved people and never met a stranger.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 6th at Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland, MS.
Survivors include her two sons Jimmy Powell of Cleveland and Bill Powell (Janice) of Greenville and a daughter Pat Rasberry (John “Ras”) of Tupelo along with three grandsons and two great-grandsons.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence Eugene (Buddy) Powell, in 2004, and a grandson Michael Galtelli.

Mr. Legarda was born on June 3, 1970 to Agustin Legarda Barron and Manuela Guadalupe Cabral Rubalcava. Mr. Legarda married Patricia Romo Legarda on July 7, 2009 in Ittabena, MS. He was a member of New Life and Hope Baptist Church in Sunflower, MS. He loved fishing, watching soap operas, and traveling with his son.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Romo Legarda; son, Jose Legarda; and step-son, Juan Arzola of Doddsville.

Mrs. Pearson was born on April 19, 1929 in Cleveland to Johnny Alfus Griffing and Nora Watts Levi. She was employed at the ASCS for 30 years and was also employed by the Circuit Clerk.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, J. C. Belk; and her second husband, Charles Pearson; and her parents, Johnny Griffing and Nora Griffing Levi.
Survivors include two daughters, Kay Belk Bullock (Jerry) of Boyle; Kathy Belk Robinson (David) of Cleveland; four grandchildren, Angie Bullock Butler (Ronnie), Sean Bullock (Debbie), Heather Robinson and Brian Robinson (Heather); and great grandchildren, Niven and Kolten Bullock and Hailey Robinson.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Butler, Sean Bullock, Brian Robinson, Ed Ballard, Ray Cothran and Vern Daniels.

Mrs. Prewitt was born April 21, 1913 to Thomas Jefferson Lindsey and Lottie Lipe Lindsey. She married Joseph Loddie Prewitt July 3, 1929 in Cleveland. She was a member of Cleveland Church of Christ.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Lottie Lipe Lindsey and her husband, Joseph Lottie Prewitt. Survivors include her sons, Joseph Lindsey Prewitt (Helen) of Phoenix, AZ, Richard L. Prewitt (Sarah) of Jackson, MS and Johnny Prewitt (Patsy) of Greenville, MS; sisters, Allie Mae Lindsey Stephens of Greenwood, MS, Mary Lindsey Farrish (Melvin) of Greenwood, MS and Margie Lindsey Wilburn (Harold) of Sidon, MS; 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Pallbearers are James Lindsey, Matt Prewitt, Kenny McMahan, D. I. Smith, Brad Prewitt and John Melvin Farrish.
