Virgil Jefferson Muirhead, 76, of Cleveland

Virgil Jefferson Muirhead, 76, of Cleveland passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010 at his home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Cleveland Church of Christ with Bro. Tim McCarter officiating. Burial will follow in North Cleveland Cemetery under the direction of Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Mr. Muirhead was born on September 21, 1933 to Robert Jefferson Muirhead and Clara Taylor Muirhead. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Tommie Lee Coleman on November 22, 1952. He was a member of the Cleveland Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Tommie Lee Muirhead of Cleveland; three sons, Tommy Jefferson Muirhead of Flora, MS, Ronald Carol Muirhead of Cleveland, Rufus Taylor Muirhead of Grenada; two daughters, Bernice Muirhead Wilson and Roseann Muirhead Mathis, both of Cleveland; a brother, R. C. Muirhead of Greenwood; three sisters, Clarice Campbell of Coffeeville, MS, Lillian Aldy of Sallis, MS, and Elsie Guenther of Helena, Arkansas; seventeen grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.
Pallbearers are David Muirhead, Jonathan Muirhead, Jeff Muirhead, Joe Mathis, Matt Wilson, Jordan Muirhead and Ron Muirhead.
Honorary pallbearers are Brian Jackson, Tony Aldy and Galen Regan.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Gladys Elvearetta Eckstein Smith, 86

Gladys Elvearetta Eckstein Smith, 86 died on March 6, 2010 at Sagebrooke Health Center in Cedar Park, Texas. The funeral services will be on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Daniel Crane officiating and the burial will follow at the Merigold Cemetery. The visitation will be on Thursday, March 11, 2010 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Ray Funeral Home.
Gladys moved to Lago Vista, Texas to be with family in 2005.

Gladys was born September 19, 1923 to George C. Eckstein and Elvearetta Mae Phillipi Eckstein in Lancaster, New York.
Gladys is preceded in death by her husband Archie Franklin Smith, father George C. Eckstein, mother Elvearetta Phillipi Eckstein, three brothers Lowell Eckstein, Arthur Eckstein and George Eckstein, and two sisters, Bes Eckstein Martin and Grace Eckstein Newton.
Gladys is survived by her sons, Alan (Roger) Smith (Julia) of Leander, Texas, Paul Douglas Smith (Mickie) of Lago Vista, Texas; four grandchildren, Alan Smith II (Paige) , Alecia Ayers, Benjamin Smith (Kerri) and Michael Smith (Crystal); four step-grandchildren, Heather Snyder (Dave), Richard McCoy (Barbara), Donovan Lasyone (Isabel) and Tina Parker (Jeff Myers); four great grandchildren, Evan Smith, Corinne Smith, MacKenzie Wyatt and Preston Ayers; and eight step-great grandchildren, Christen Lasyone, Catrina Lasyone, Nathan Lasyone, Colby Parker, Brett Myers, Bryce Snyder, Reese Snyder, Brooke Snyder and Abbee McCoy.
Gladys graduated from Edward J Meyer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Erie County, NY in 1941 where she continued her nursing career until she joined the Army Corp of Nursing and moved to Daytona Beach, Florida in 1943. It was then she met her husband, Archie Franklin Smith and they were married on March 10, 1945 in Bunnell, Florida. Archie and Gladys soon moved to Merigold, Mississippi in 1945.

After moving to Mississippi where she and Archie made their home, Gladys continued her nursing career working for Bolivar County Hospital, Baxter Laboratories, Delta State Infirmary, and The Mississippi Department of Health where she retired after approximately 30 years of service.
Gladys was a member of the Cleveland Church of Christ prior to moving to Lago Vista, Texas with her family.

Pall Bearers are Alan Smith II, Michael Smith, Jeff Myers, Douglass Pannell, Ross Hunt and L.E. Moon.

Emma Deal, 83, of Drew

Emma Deal, 83, of Drew expired on Sunday, February 28, 2010, at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland at approximately 1:45 a.m.
Funeral services will be at 11a.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010, at the Holly Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Drew. Burial will follow in Drew Cemetery.
On Friday, March 5, 2010, visitation will be from 2-4p.m. at Byas Funeral in Ruleville and family hours will be held at the Holly Grove M.B. Church in Drew from 5-7p.m.
Emma was born on February 16, 1927, in Whitney, to the late Henry and Susie Deal. She is the older of two children.  Emma's parents, Henry and Susie Deal, and her sister, Jessie, preceded her in death.
She is a member of the Holly Grove M.B. Church under the leadership of Rev. Jesse F. Gresham, where she was Mother.
She has devoted 40 years of dedicated services to educating children in the Drew School District, where she taught at Hunter Elementary School and A.W. James Elementary School. She graduated from the Drew School District; Mississippi Valley State College, (now Mississippi Valley State University) in Itta Bena; and did additional studies at Delta State University in Cleveland.
Emma lived a rich and full life. She was devoted to training and teaching young children to be productive, respectful, and an asset to society. She was so grateful knowing that she had touched many lives when her former students would visit her and recall the pride and challenging times they shared that made a difference in their lives.
Survivors include three children, a daughter, Bobbie White of Cleveland, two sons, Booker T. Black of Drew and John Lee (Dora) Black of Coffeville; one uncle, Emmit of St. Louis; two aunts, Nita and Rose of St. Louis; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, other relatives, classmates and friends.

Alice Maxine Reese, 94, of Calhoun City

Alice Maxine Reese, 94, of Calhoun City died Thursday, March 4, 2010, at Calhoun Health Services Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel in Calhoun City. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Vardaman.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and had been active in church activities. She was a registered nurse and worked for the Public Health Service for many years. She was a litetime member of the New Century Club and was selected as Woman of the Year.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Marshall Roberston and Myrtice Dye Robertson; husband, Benjamin Howell Reese; and a son, Dr. Andy James Reese.
She is survived by daughters, Betty Alice Reese Lindsey of Cleveland and Hilda Jane Reese Hemphill of Slate Springs; son, Benjamin Howell Reese Jr. of Calhoun City; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dale Hays, Danny Hawkins, Robert Gaston, Wayne Crocker, George Mounger, William Price Wright, Dr. Reese Lindsey and Ben Reese.
Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Lackey, Rupert Lunceford, Mike Dunagin, Johnny Aven and Jim Keyser.

Amanda Carr, 75, of Cleveland

Amanda Carr, 75, of Cleveland, died Thursday, March 4, 2010, at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Baptist Church in Cleveland with the Rev. Sammy Rash officiating. Burial will follow at Macedonia Cemetery in Boyle.
Survivors include: four sons, Stanley R. Carr and Larry Roberts, both of Mound Bayou, Lantis G. Roberts of Arlington, Texas, and Michael A. Carr of Terrell, Texas; three daughters, Beverly Washington of Dallas, Cheryl Coleman of Villa Riza, Ga., and Regina Bell of Cleveland; brother, Calvin Wicks of East St. Louis, Ill.; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ruby Hazel Arnold, 90, of Greenville

Mrs. Ruby Hazel Arnold, 90, of Greenville died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2010 at Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will begin an hour before the service.

Hercial Wayne Cobb, Sr, 65 , of Cleveland

Hercial Wayne Cobb, Sr, 65 , of Cleveland passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at University Medical Center in Jackson. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Gresham officiating. Burial will follow in Lehrton Cemetery in Ruleville. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday and from 2–3 p.m. Saturday, both at the funeral home.
Mr. Cobb was born on September 15, 1944 in Cleveland to Hercial Dean and Pauline Elizabeth Shurden Cobb. He married Eloise Griffin on December 4, 1966 in Cleveland. Mr. Cobb was the Police Chief of Cleveland, past president of the Kiwanis Club, past president of the Mississippi Police Chief Association, deacon at Mid-South Baptist Church, past president of the Exchange Club, founding member of BASS Cleveland Chapter.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Eloise Griffin Cobb of Cleveland; son Hercial (Junior) Wayne Cobb, Jr. and wife Mary Susan of Cleveland; daughter Lois Anne Cobb of Ruleville; and two sisters Mary Lou Forbes Alexander and Shirlene Cobb Weaver, both of Cleveland; three grandchildren, Sara Chesley Cobb, Keely Linn Haney, Jackson Carter Cobb and a host of nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Cleveland Police Department.
