Mosquito Test Positive for West Nile

07/28/2010

A mosquito sample reported caught around Canton is apparently the first to test positive for West Nile virus in 2010 in the state.

According to the Mississippi State Department of Health, they conduct statewide mosquito testing during the heightened mosquito season with its strongest observation during the peak West Nile mosquito reproduction months of July, August and September.

Officials say that the "one-bug sample" is no reason to be troubled, but medical authorities still maintain that preventive measures are still recommended until peak mosquito months are finished.
